Description
Have you had a work accident as a temp worker? What should you do in this case? And what exactly is a work accident?
The Central Prevention Service for the Temporary Work Sector, Prévention et Intérim (PI), is here to guide you. Its main mission is to reduce the risk of work accidents for temp workers and protect their health.
What is a work accident?
A work accident is an event that meets several criteria:
- It is a sudden event.
- This event causes an injury.
- The injury is caused by one or more external causes.
- There is a causal relationship between the accident and the injury.
- The accident happens during the performance of your work or as a result of it.
Are you covered for work accidents?
Yes, as a temp worker, you are covered for work accidents by the temp agency that employs you. It is the agency’s responsibility to report the accident to the insurer.
What should you do in case of a work accident?
As soon as you start working for a company, you should be informed about the procedures to follow in case of an accident. This information is typically provided in the welcome brochure or the work regulations. If you can’t find this procedure, ask your temp consultant for advice. Here are the essential steps to follow:
1. In case of an accident at the workplace:
- Ensure your safety first and call for help if necessary. The company you work for should have first-aid measures in place.
- Immediately inform your temp agency to report the accident. They will guide you through the necessary steps.
- Notify your supervisor as quickly as possible.
- If the injury requires medical attention, see a doctor and have them fill out a first medical certificate.
- Stay available to answer questions from your temp agency and the insurer.
Tip: If someone witnessed the accident, take note of their contact details. This could be useful if the insurer has any questions.
2. In case of an accident on the way to or from work:
An accident on the commute to or from work can be considered a work accident. The steps are similar, but here are a few additional things to consider:
- If possible, ask for the witnesses’ contact information.
- If a report was filed, include it in your file.
- Take photos of the accident scene and the circumstances, as this may be helpful.
And after?
Once the accident is reported, the temp agency will submit the file to the insurer. They will assess whether the incident qualifies as a work accident. If so, here’s what will happen:
- Medical costs related to the accident will be covered.
- Your salary will be maintained until the end of your contract, according to the terms outlined.
